The administrative ban, however, did not keep her out of an October primary, because the opposition Unitary Platform coalition, which is backed by the United States, organized the vote without assistance from Venezuela’s electoral authorities.

Candidates must register by late March, giving Machado and other opposition factions less than three weeks to decide next steps.

The bitterly fought election went into a run-off on 30 October and was won by an extremely narrow margin by Lula.

Those talks initially bore fruit, with the cessation of street protests and the Maduro government’s release of a handful of jailed activists.
